Material Indication
Overview
This course delves into the role of materials in visual storytelling, teaching students to recognize and analyze material indicators in various media. Through weekly lectures, class discussions, and critiques of homework assignments, students will explore how to discern why certain materials aren't conveying the desired effect (e.g., why a metal render appears plastic) and how to effectively convey fantasy concepts (e.g., alien fruit). The course encourages the development of a critical eye for breaking down visual elements into actionable feedback. While not tied to any specific digital content creation tools, the principles taught apply broadly across traditional, current, and future media. By the end of the course, students will be equipped with the skills to analyze and improve material depiction in any visual medium.
