Tomasz Opasinski's free workshop on the design of iconic movie posters helps kick off a celebration of the talents that make LA a world design capital

Each year, the Los Angeles Design Festival celebrates the creative talents that make LA a global design capital – and in 2016, that includes Gnomon. On Saturday 11 June, the school is offering visitors a chance to discover how the posters for some of the world's biggest movies are created in an exclusive two-hour workshop hosted by veteran creative director Tomasz Opasinski, whose portfolio includes work for Tron: Legacy, Oblivion and I Am Legend.

During the talk, which is open to the public and free to attend, Opasinski will provide an insider's guide to the Hollywood advertising agency, and reveal the tools and techniques used to create work for some of the biggest agencies in the industry.

Celebrating a century of creativity

One of the festival's other highlights, INTRO/LA, provides a link to Hollywood movies of an earlier era – the age of silent comedies. Located in the historic Mack Sennett Studios in Silver Lake, the show brings together some of the best contemporary furniture and lighting designers.

The festival spills out into Silver Lake itself, which – along with Culver City, La Brea and Downtown LA – has been selected as one of four 'design districts' for the month. Visitors can go on guided tours of local design hotspots, from art galleries and architects' offices to restaurants, or visit pop-up marketplaces and shops.

Outside the four districts, things get varied, with events ranging from a celebration of the urban gardening revolution taking place in South Central to tours of luxury homes in Venice. The festival covers design from the local right up to the international scale, also encompassing Dwell on Design, the nation's largest design event, which takes place at the LA Convention Center.

Other highlights include an evening with Deborah Weintraub, Los Angeles' chief architect, and recipient of the festival's ICON award, and a panel discussion between other leading architects, designers, journalists and activists at the 2016 symposium of the Association of Women in Architecture and Design.

Two weeks of the best in contemporary design

From early high points like Gnomon's movie poster design workshop to the after-party, the 2016 Los Angeles Design Festival packs in over 60 separate events, concluding on 26 June with the TURF Tournament – a competitive mini golf contest featuring special obstacles designed by local architecture practices. After two weeks sampling the best that contemporary design has to offer, and Los Angeles' role in creating it, it's a great way to wind down.
