Gnomon students selected for the school's Best of Term – Winter 2016 have triumphed at prestigious international CG awards scheme The Rookies.

Great minds clearly think alike: three of the students selected for Gnomon's Best of Term showcase for the 2016 Winter Term have just gone on to win at The Rookies – the prestigious international prizes formerly known as the CG Student Awards.

Described as “the Oscars for young creative minds”, The Rookies attracted close to 2,000 entries from 475 schools and colleges worldwide, with the winning entries selected by a panel of leading entertainment artists headed by four-time Oscar winner and director of Weta Digital Joe Letteri.

Beat Reichenbach was selected for Gnomon's Best of Term for this moody study of Roy Batty from Blade Runner. The image formed part of his winning portfolio at The Rookies.

Gnomon student Beat Reichenbach, selected in the Character – 3D category for Best of Term, went on to win Highly Commended in the closely fought VFX & Animation category of the Rookies, while Apple Qinyang Zhang, selected for Compositing Illustration, achieved the same feat in The Rookies' Illustration category – in which Gnomon was also voted Illustration School of the Year.

Apple Qinying Zhang's porfolio triumphed in the Compositing Illustration category for Best of Term, and took Highly Commended in the Illustration category at The Rookies.

In addition, Brian Magno, a modeler and texture artist on Stephen Cunnane's charming Best of Term Grand Prize-winning animation The Model, was selected for one of The Rookies' international studio internships on the strength of his entry in the VFX & Animation category.

Other winners at this year's Rookies had appeared in Gnomon's Best of Term line-up in the past. Christen Smith – twice selected for Best of Term, for Hard Surface Modeling and Environment Design – went on to win Highly Commended in The Rookies' Next-Gen Games category, alongside fellow Gnomon graduate Juliano Yi. Christen is now working at James Cameron's Lightstorm Entertainment after a stint working at Naughty Dog on Uncharted 4.

Another Rookies internship went to Caroline Ng, who was selected for Gnomon's Best of Term in the 2015 Spring Term for Texturing and Shading.
