Explore the captivating realm of scary and hair-raising creature and character creation in celebration of Halloween during a special art jam session with guest veteran artists including Creature Designer, Concept Artist, Writer, Director, Jerad Marantz; Senior Concept Artist Luis Carrasco and Kyle Brown; and Concept Artist Jared Krichevsky. On Thursday, October 29, join Gnomon host and representative, Adam Hartel, as he talks with the veteran artists about their artistic and career journey’s, their individual artistic process for creature creation, what their favorite projects are to date, and what it’s like being a creature and character concept artist in the entertainment industry.
During this special event, the veteran artists will utilize a single, collaborative canvas to freestyle draw Halloween inspired creatures and give a walkthrough of their creative decision process and how they approach creating creatures and characters that stand out. Jerad S. Marantz started his career at an early age interning for Special FX houses. Trying a little of everything enabled him to narrow his focus to creature design, and concept art. His acquired skills in sculpture, painting, illustration, 3D Modeling, and Photoshop all aid his unique sense of design.

Kyle Brown grew up in Dublin, Ohio, a suburb of Columbus, Ohio, where he graduated from the Columbus College of Art & Design with a Bachelor’s degree in Illustration. In elementary school, Kyle first learned about Concept Design after he started looking through a copy of the Art of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. He was fascinated by the works of Ralph McQuarrie and Joe Johnston and immediately knew that was the career he wanted to have. After CCAD, Kyle moved to Los Angeles to attend the Gnomon School of Visual Effects, which led to roles in the entertainment field as a creature and character designer working predominantly in film and television. He has worked on projects from Warner Bros. 20th Century Fox, Netflix, Sony, The Jim Henson Company and Disney. Projects include Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One, Netflix’s reboot of Lost in Space, Disney’s Mulan, Birds of Prey, Men In Black: International, X-Men Dark Phoenix, The Predator, and Ghostbusters (2016) with many more on the horizon. Kyle also teaches Creature Design at Gnomon School of Visual Effects, as well as Character Development and Digital Sculpting.
Luis is a Character & Creature design specialist who worked on many acclaimed titles including StarWars The Force Awakens, Jurassic World, and Ready Player One. As a designer, Luis collaborates with Art Directors on visual development across projects, provides concept art to communicate ideas for the design and look of a project, for directorial approval. Luis has taught design at many institutions including the Gnomon School of Visual Effects and the Academy of Art University.
Jared is a character and creature designer working in the visual effects industry. and has worked on characters for the big and small screen including Jiminy Cricket on ABC’S Once Upon a Time(2011), The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014-2016), Horus and Set in God’s of Egypt (2014), Elliot the Dragon in Pete’s Dragon(2016), The Crooked Man in James Wan’s Conjuring 2 (2016), Dart in Stranger Things 2 (2017), and Pennywise the Clown in the horror film IT (2017). Jared’s exciting upcoming projects include Guillermo Del Toro and Scott Cooper’s Antlers (2019) and Godzilla Vs King Kong (2020) and Black Adam (2022).
