Join us on Friday, March 10th as we welcome Jason Michael Hall to the Gnomon Stage for a behind-the-scenes look at how he created some of the stylized visuals from Awolnation’s “Beds are Burning” music video (produced and directed by Jason and Gingerbear Haus Studio)!
After Awolnation released an album of cover songs last year, Jason led the charge in creating an animated version of lead singer Aaron Bruno dancing in a synthwave-retro-Miami-style video created primarily in Blender.
Through a live demo, Jason will share the texturing process and toon shaders for this style and how to implement and modify motion capture data in Blender. He will also talk about creating interesting graphic visuals using simple tools like primitives, modifiers, and UVs and some of the Eevee’s native Light Probe effects.
If you’re interested in learning about how Blender can be used with external tools like Reallusion’s Character Creator, ZBrush, and the Rokoko Motion Capture suit (or if you’re an artist trapped in a rocker’s body), you won’t want to miss this demo! Senior Previz Artist for Blizzard Entertainment
Jason Michael Hall arrived in Los Angeles in 2006 after being accepted into Gnomon’s Certificate Program. He completed the program with a solid foundation as a CG Generalist which has led to a successful 17-year career in Film, Animation, and Games primarily in Pre-Visualization and Layout.
During that time, he has been creating amazing action sequences on many of the top big-budget Visual Effects films and Directors of the last decade. Including JJ Abrams, Zack Snyder, and Michael Bay. Films include Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Transformers, Spongebob Squarepants, Sonic the Hedgehog, X-Men, and Deadpool.
In addition to working in Pre-Viz, he’s also contributed in areas like concept design, storyboarding, and animatics, as well as teaching Character Design and PreVisualization at Gnomon. His latest move brought him to the games industry when he joined the incredibly talented Blizzard Cinematics Team in early 2020, contributing to many projects such as the recent Dragon Flight Launch Trailer and the upcoming Overwatch 2 PvE. He is also the founder of Gingerbear Haus Studio, Directing and Producing animated content for music videos and short films using primarily Blender.
Currently living in the Echo Park neighborhood in Los Angeles with his wife Nicky as he spends the majority of his free time looking for new Korean food spots and obsessing over Blender and the freedom it has provided to bring all his original ideas to life.
