About the Online Platform

Gnomon’s online courses are being delivered via live, virtual classes that are designed to closely parallel the learning environment of our on-campus, physical courses.

For over a decade, Gnomon has delivered an online learning experience to students all over the world, utilizing an easy-to-use interface that provides access to courses, homework, forums, and more. Through live, interactive instruction, students are able to ask questions and receive critiques in real-time – just as if you were sitting in a classroom.

The School believes this interactive learning experience closely mirrors that of a physical classroom environment, providing the highest quality education, instruction, and comprehensive educational experience possible.

Are online courses right for me?

Gnomon is committed to delivering the highest level of instruction possible, both online and in the classroom. To ensure that you are equipped for success in our online learning environment, we have prepared a quick Student Online Class Preparedness Survey that, if answered honestly, will quickly assess your readiness for online learning success.

System Requirements

Students taking Gnomon’s online classes must meet the minimum system requirements as well as any additional system specifications required by the software used in the course.

Minimum Internet Speed Requirements

You will need a high-speed internet connection to view the online lectures. A minimum 1.5 Mbps connection is required.

For PC-based students:

Frequently Asked Questions

General

One of the benefits of Gnomon is networking. How will we be able to do that online?

Gnomon’s online classes are taught in a live, 3-hour format the same way that on-campus courses are taught. Instructors and students can see each other's cameras and can communicate via voice, text, and screen sharing.

Does Gnomon provide a platform for students to connect throughout the week between classes?

Every class has a built-in message board that allows students and the instructor to communicate with one another, share ideas, and ask and answer questions. Many students and teachers already use a variety of social platforms such as Discord and Slack, forming study groups that mimic working in a lab together.

What does an online drawing class look like?

With the exception of courses that utilize live models, Gnomon’s traditional drawing instruction is shown via a projector in a classroom. The online system will be virtually identical to viewing a lesson on campus via projector or similar.

What if I need help with coursework outside of the 3-hour class time?

For academic support or guidance outside of class, students are encouraged to utilize the Academic Mentoring Center (AMC), which is populated by multiple faculty members.

Are Academic Mentors or peer tutors available remotely during the week?

Yes, all Academic Mentors will be available Monday-Friday by appointment only. To set an appointment with an Academic Mentor, please email amc@gnomon.edu or the appropriate AMC member directly.

Courses

What happens if a class is cancelled or rescheduled?

As with any live, on-campus course, a class may need to be cancelled or rescheduled. If an instructor needs to postpone a class, the administrative staff will simply extend the class one week or set up an appropriate date for a make-up session. A notification will be sent to the class with information pertinent to the re-schedule.

What happens if I miss a class?

If you are unable to attend a class session, simply notify your instructor. As you will be missing out on valuable information, you may want to use the forums to see if other students in the class can share their notes or fill you in on what was missed that week.

How long are the courses?

Online courses will follow Gnomon’s standard 10-week schedule, meeting once per week on the same day and time. Please check the course schedule for course schedule information.

How long is each class session?

Each class session is scheduled within a 3-hour block. A class will typically consist of homework review, a short Q&A session, and lecture.

Do I receive feedback?

Yes. Depending on the amount of information in a given week’s lecture, homework reviews may be limited to only a select number of students each week. Homework critiques will be performed in the live classroom session. Some weeks, the instructor may perform in-depth critiques of everyone’s work. If you require help or review on a specific assignment, please let the instructor know at the beginning of class or post your work to the course discussion forum for peer feedback.

Technical

Where can I go to test my internet speed?

You can test your internet speed at SpeedTest.net

Can I use a WiFi connection?

Some wireless connections have a higher occurrence of dropped signals than others. Some issues are simply caused by interference, and others can be attributed to the wireless router. If you are experiencing an issue with dropped or faulty connectivity, it is recommended that you swap over to a hard-wired internet connection.

Do I need a webcam?

Students enrolled in an online course are encouraged to have a working webcam for each class session. Webcams allow students to communicate directly with the instructor of the class without the distractions of using the chat module in the application. This helps to facilitate a more interactive experience for both the student and instructor.

Will there be a setup for remote rendering for my large files?

While remote rendering on Gnomon’s network will not be possible, we have partnered with RebusFarm, Chaos Cloud, and GridMarkets - online render services that support a variety of software – to support program enrolled students.

For individual course takers looking for rendering options, there are a number of render farm providers around the world, including the ones listed above.

Most of them provide a multitude of render options through a variety of renderers (not just V-Ray). Costs can range dramatically from farm to farm but are generally a lot less than people sometimes assume. Cost is primarily driven by the renderer the client (you) choose but can be managed by ensuring projects are optimized prior to job submission. It is also a good idea to perform spot or wedge render jobs (one render every 30 frames – or more) to ensure there are no errors. Please also note that custom plugins and scripts may not be supported – check with the provider prior to signing up if you are using custom plugins that may not be supported on their farm.

Will the lectures be provided as a video lecture to watch later?

Not at this time. Lectures are delivered live and in real-time. The interactive experience is, in our opinion, the most effective way to learn. It is therefore the responsibility of the student to take notes and ask questions during the class.

What if I have questions or need technical assistance?

You will find most answers to your questions by clicking “Help” in the main menu bar of your student dashboard. Frequently asked questions and helpful links will be posted here along with direct email links to our support specialists. Each page on the system will also host a feedback link for students to report any issues they are having. These issues will be monitored by our support specialist and development team who will quickly respond to any issues you may have. If you need technical assistance at any time you may contact a support specialist through Gnomon’s Knowledge Base and Support Site. This email will be directed to our support specialist to have your issue resolved.

For questions specific to your class, please post these to your class discussion forum. These questions will be addressed, in most cases, by your peers in your class or by your instructor.

Campus & Safety Protocols FAQ

2022 Spring Campus & Safety FAQ

Is campus open and accessible for Spring?

Yes. Gnomon’s campus is open. You may enter on the first day of the Spring Term, April 11th, or any day thereafter. Please note, that all individuals who wish to be on campus must provide proof of being fully vaccinated or have a vaccination card on record with Gnomon from the previous term.

The protocols are as follows:

Fully Vaccinated Staff, Faculty and Students:

  • Must provide proof of being fully vaccinated or have a vaccination card on record with Gnomon from the previous term.
  • Booster vaccinations are strongly encouraged, but will not be an enforced requirement to access campus.
  • Negative tests are preferred, but optional. They will only be required if an individual has been exposed to or has tested positive for COVID-19.
  • Masking for both indoor and outdoor campus activities is now optional. Proof of vaccination is required for all maskless activity.

Unvaccinated Staff, Faculty and Students:

  • Must have an approved exemption on record to access the Gnomon campus.
  • Must submit and upload weekly negative test results.
  • Must agree to and follow all protocols outlined on the approved exemption documentation.
  • Must wear a mask indoors while on the Gnomon campus.

Fully Vaccinated Visitors (Non-Staff/Faculty/Students):

  • Must upload proof of being fully vaccinated before entering campus.
  • Booster vaccinations are strongly encouraged, but will not be an enforced criteria to access campus for visitors.
  • Negative tests are preferred and can be uploaded with vaccination cards. This is optional.
  • Masking for both indoor and outdoor campus activities is optional. Proof of vaccination is required for all maskless activity.

Unvaccinated Visitors (Non-Staff/Faculty/Students):

  • A negative test is required before accessing Gnomon's campus. This must be uploaded and on record.
  • Masking is required indoors.

Can I take my class in a lab or other on-campus space during the scheduled online learning hours?

Yes. All students may attend their online course on Gnomon’s campus in a lab or lecture classroom during the hours the learning is scheduled. A headset is mandatory. Please bring and use a personal headset/mic so as to not disturb others’ learning or study.

Do I need to make a reservation to be on-campus or use a classroom or lab?

No, reservations are not required. The campus is 100% open for the entirety of Spring Term.

What will happen if COVID-19, or Omicron, gets worse during Spring term?

Gnomon will always make decisions based on a multitude of factors including your health and wellbeing, your academic goals, the completion of our shared objectives, the School’s mission, mandates, and recommendations from local, state, and federal health officials, among others.

Support & Access

Is the Student Store open?

Yes. The Gnomon Student Store is currently open during limited hours. Please reach out to the Store for details.

Where can I park?

Street parking is available but is metered and can be limited. Alternately, parking is available in the lot directly south of the Gnomon campus on Romaine and Cahuenga. To use this lot, students must obtain a keycard which can be purchased online through the Student Web Portal. See below.

How can I purchase a parking pass?

Please send your request to Student Accounts or you may purchase online through the Student Web Portal. Students must obtain a keycard which can be purchased online for $140.00 per term. Each keycard is active until after the makeup week of the current term. There is a $15.00 replacement fee if the keycard is damaged, lost, or stolen. Keycards must be returned at the end of the term to Student Accounts.

Is the campus open for tours?

Yes, with advance reservation and adherence to established health and safety guidelines outlined in this communication under “Full Vaccinated Visitors” or “Unvaccinated Visitors.”

Technical

I do not have a computer or workstation, can I use Gnomon's?

Yes. You may use any available on-campus computer at any time during Spring Term. Hours of operation are Monday-Friday 9:00 am- 1:00 am., Saturday 9:00 am-10:00 pm, and Sunday 9:00 am-7:00 pm.

COVID-19 Health & Safety

Does Gnomon require students to get the COVID 19 vaccination?

Yes. All persons planning to be on Gnomon’s campus for the 2022 academic year must submit proof of Full Vaccination in advance unless receiving an approved exemption for medical or religious/philosophical reasons. While our goal is a 100% vaccinated population, we legally must allow for exemptions for students, staff, and faculty. Any enrolled student who requires an exemption for these noted reasons, please contact Student Affairs for the Exemption Form.

The Form, which contains requirements clarifying continuous COVID-19 testing, specific protocols, and safety procedures for the unvaccinated, must be submitted and approved prior to entrance.

Campus guests who are not enrolled in or employed by the School are ineligible for an exemption and must submit proof of full vaccination or provide a negative COVID test prior to entrance.

Are all on-campus employees during the 2022 academic year required to be vaccinated for COVID-19?

Yes, all employees who are working on campus during the 2022 academic year have been required to receive and provide proof of the COVID-19 vaccination or have a completed and approved Exemption Form.

What are the current safety protocols? Is there a mask mandate?

All students currently enrolled at Gnomon have received health and safety protocols, rules, and regulations prior to the term start. Each student is required to provide the necessary documentation and follow all steps before being allowed on campus.

County guidelines that determine Gnomon’s ability to operate in person are changing rapidly, and very few protocols are at the School’s discretion. For this reason, many details including specific health and safety protocols such as requiring personal protective equipment, social distancing, and additional best practices, are subject to change at the city, county, and state levels.

The School will continue to seek guidance from public health experts on what is legally permitted and medically advisable, and we will certainly keep our student population, and entire community, informed. We will keep our community regularly updated as more specific information is made available.

Gnomon has a designated COVID-19 Compliance Task Force that is responsible for establishing and enforcing all COVID-19 safety protocols and ensuring that staff, faculty, and students receive education about COVID-19. Gnomon also has assigned a COVID-19 Compliance Officer to oversee the task force and who serves as a liaison in the event of an outbreak on campus. Gnomon has purchased and provided in many classrooms, labs, and the library Aerus Pure & Clean w/ ActivePure Technology air filtration units. Gnomon Operations is working closely with the property owners of the Hollywood Exchange property to upgrade the HVAC system with advanced filtration, heightening MERV and HEPA standards for internal air filtration for all interior classrooms and office spaces.

PPE Supplies and Cleaning Stations for proper hand hygiene and disinfection are available to all students, staff, and faculty at strategic locations campus-wide.

Gnomon has:

  • A designated COVID-19 Compliance Task Force that is responsible for establishing and enforcing all policies and procedures to support the health of our community
  • A designated COVID-19 Compliance Officer who serves as a liaison to DPH in the event of an outbreak on campus.
  • Ensured break rooms, restrooms, classrooms, labs, offices, and other common areas and commonly touched items will be disinfected throughout the day and evening. Enhanced cleaning of all campus buildings will be completed on a regular basis by a professional cleaning service and trained custodial staff.
  • Disallowed the use of drinking fountains and communally shared water refilling stations as this is prohibited. Students are encouraged to carry their own water.
  • Ensure break rooms, restrooms, classrooms, labs, offices, and other common areas and commonly touched items will be disinfected throughout the day and evening. Enhanced cleaning of all campus buildings will be completed on a regular basis by a professional cleaning service and trained custodial staff.
  • Disallowed the use of drinking fountains and communally shared water refilling stations as this is prohibited. Students are encouraged to carry their own water.
  • Ensured and communicated that student kitchens will be tailored for partial use only. Refrigerators will be made available, however, the communal use, supply, and availability of cooking and eating utensils, plates, dishes, and napkins will not be available and student kitchens do not contain an area to dine. Students are encouraged to bring their own items to campus, eat off-campus, and/or dine in an exterior/outdoor space.
  • Communicated that the Gnomon Student Store will not sell food or beverages until further notice.

Are masks still required on campus if I am vaccinated?

Masking for both indoor and outdoor campus activities is now optional. Proof of vaccination is required for all maskless activity. Please see the protocols outlined in this communication.

What are the capacity restrictions for in-person class attendance?

Gnomon’s classrooms will have no more than 18 students in a physical classroom, and an average class size of 12 students is likely. Any additional capacity restrictions mandated by the County will be adopted to fulfill our obligation to keep students, staff, and faculty safe.

Have there been known cases of COVID-19 at Gnomon?

As of Spring term 2022, no active COVID-19 cases have been disclosed or known on campus.

How will Gnomon handle known cases of COVID-19 among its community?

Gnomon has been certified in COVID-19 Safety Compliance by the Los Angeles Department of Public Health. We are prepared to fully implement all required COVID-19 protocols as outlined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the LACDPH to minimize the spread of COVID-19.

Gnomon has a designated COVID-19 Compliance Task Force that is responsible for establishing and enforcing all COVID-19 safety protocols and ensuring that staff, faculty, and students receive education about COVID-19. Gnomon also has a designated COVID-19 Compliance Officer who serves as a liaison in the event of an outbreak on campus.

A COVID-19 Prevention Program and Response Plan has been crafted and is available per request.

In the case of a positive COVID-19 case, the area in question would be evacuated and closed off as soon as possible. A request to our cleaning crew for a deep clean and sanitizing service (hospital grade) would be placed immediately. In some cases, it might be best to let the room “rest” 24 hours before sending a crew in to clean and sanitize.

Any individual on campus who had potential COVID-19 exposure will be contacted to notify them of their potential or presumed exposure and directed to quarantine and seek testing per CADPH guidelines. Unvaccinated persons may be asked to leave campus, for their safety, and must wait for approval to return.

Detailed due diligence and notifications will be provided and reported to the LA County Department of Public Health.

What may occur if there are active COVID-19 cases on campus to the unvaccinated person who has an approved exemption?

In active infectious disease outbreak situations, persons granted an exemption may be asked to vacate campus, and may not be allowed to return to campus, for their protection, until the outbreak is declared to be over. These situations will be determined on a case-by-case basis, and in consultation with state and local public health officials.

For students: All students have the Right to Withdraw at any time, and unless a Withdrawal is activated by the student, the individual is responsible for any missed course work and all tuition or other charges regardless of campus presence. Students may also request a Leave of Absence. Please view Gnomon’s Student Catalog for eligibility and information.

What do I do if I have been exposed to COVID-19?

If you have been exposed to COVID-19, or have been in contact with an infected person, either on or off campus, isolate, and get tested immediately. Contact your medical provider. For the sake of our entire community, only enter campus if you test negative and are not experiencing any related symptoms.

What do I do if I am experiencing COVID-19 symptoms?

If you are experiencing COVID-19–related symptoms, have tested positive for COVID-19, please follow the instructions below.

  • Please remain home, contact a medical provider, and arrange for a COVID-19 test immediately (if you have been tested). Please do not report to campus.
  • Review CDC Recommendations: What to Do If You Are Sick
  • For a list of free COVID-19 testing centers or to sign up for an exam please visit https://coronavirus.lacity.org/covid-19-testing.
  • If your COVID-19 test shows positive results (the virus is present), or uncertain results, you may not come to campus for any reason, and after you contact your health practitioner or other professional, please communicate immediately with Student Affairs via email to clarify how to proceed.
  • To return to campus, you must provide a negative COVID-19 test, taken within 72 hours of being on campus, and be cleared to return by Student Affairs.

How do I keep up with my coursework if I contract COVID-19 and I am unable to attend classes?

If you are unable to attend class due to COVID-19 exposure or positive results, below are some options:

  • Connect with your instructors (via email). Stay in communication with instructors about possible options for making up coursework, with the understanding that in some courses it may not be possible to complete course requirements while missing in-person activity for an extended time. Please note, faculty cannot re-teach any class or lecture.
  • Connect with your classmates. Connect with your classmates to ask questions and to request that they share their notes with you.
  • Reach out to our Academic Mentoring Center for support. The Gnomon Academic Mentoring Center (AMC) is dedicated to advising students, providing additional support and tutoring with homework, and advice on managing course loads. AMC is available Monday through Friday from 9 am – 6 pm. To set an appointment with an Academic Mentor, please email amc@gnomon.edu.
  • You may also choose to take a Leave of Absence (LOA) for the term. A Leave of Absence (LOA) is an approved interruption of a student’s program of study at Gnomon. Program students may request a single term leave of absence from their studies in the event of unforeseen circumstances, such as; Family emergencies and obligations, Medical and health-related issues, or Financial reasons. Students contemplating a Leave of Absence (LOA) are encouraged to seek consultation from the Education Office (education@gnomon.edu), Student Affairs Office (studentaffairs@gnomon.edu), Registrar (registrar@gnomon.edu), and the Financial Aid Office (finaid@gnomon.edu) prior to requesting a leave. To be granted an LOA, a student must: Submit the LOA form prior to the start of the term. Under no circumstances may a student’s total time in program interruption exceed 180 days within a four (4) quarter period.
  • Withdrawal from a course or all courses. Students have a right to withdraw at any time. Please refer to the Important Dates document below for add/drop periods.

COVID-19 Immunization

What does it mean to be fully immunized/vaccinated?

In general, people are considered fully vaccinated:

  • 2 weeks after their second dose in a 2-dose series, such as the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, or
  • 2 weeks after a single-dose vaccine, such as Johnson & Johnson's Janssen vaccine.

Which vaccines will be accepted?

To meet the Gnomon's COVID-19 vaccine requirement, a vaccine must be approved by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) or World Health Organization (WHO). As of June 3, 2021, WHO has evaluated the following vaccines against COVID-19 and determined they meet the necessary criteria for safety and efficacy: AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine, Johnson and Johnson, Moderna, Pfizer/BionTech, Sinopharm, and Sinovac.

Is the vaccine safe?

According to the CDC, COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective. Please see Ensuring COVID-19 Vaccine Safety in the US.

How can I access the COVID-19 vaccine?

The COVID-19 vaccine is available to the public at no cost. For assistance finding a vaccine administration location, please visit:

  • LA County Department of Public Health
  • California State Vaccine Appointment site
  • Numerous pharmacies throughout Southern California are also offering the vaccine, including CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid, Vons/Albertsons, Ralphs, and Costco (members only).
  • LA County COVID tracing call center can help schedule appointments: Call (833) 540-0473 daily between 8 am and 8:30 pm.
  • Vaccines.gov
  • In partnership with the Los Angeles Fire Department, LAX is now offering free one-dose Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccinations for those 18 and older. Vaccine availability is subject to change. How do I submit my COVID-19 immunization records?

Gnomon has created a password-protected website where students are able to upload their vaccination and exemption information. If you are a student, please email Student Affairs in order to gain access to the website.

Student Life

Are events, clubs, and student activities being held on campus?

Yes - most events, activities and clubs will be on campus. Some student-centered activities may continue to be in an online format.

Is Gnomon continuing to support cloud-based rendering for program students?
